What is fire door inspection?

A fire door inspection is a structured check of a door, frame and associated components to identify visible defects that may affect performance.

Plain English

It is the process of checking whether fire doors appear suitable, undamaged and able to close as intended.

Fire doors are not just ordinary doors. They form part of a compartmentation and escape strategy, helping resist the spread of fire and smoke when correctly specified, installed, maintained and used.

An inspection looks at the visible condition of each fire door set. It does not turn a poor door into a compliant one by itself, but it gives the responsible person a clearer record of what is present, what is damaged and what should be investigated or repaired.

A useful inspection also considers how the door is used in practice. A technically sound fire door can still create risk if it is wedged open, fitted with unsuitable hardware, unable to latch or repeatedly damaged by day-to-day traffic.

Simple distinction: inspection identifies condition and defects. Remedial work fixes the issues. A fire risk assessment considers fire safety across the premises more widely.

Report value

A good report should make decisions easier.

The output should be clear enough for a property manager to understand and detailed enough for a maintenance team to act on.

  • Identify each inspected door and location.
  • Explain the defect in plain language.
  • Use photographs to reduce ambiguity.
  • Prioritise recommended actions where appropriate.
