Do I need fire door inspection?
If you manage a workplace, commercial premises, public building or residential common area, fire door condition should be part of your fire safety management.
You should arrange a fire door inspection if you are responsible for a building and cannot confidently evidence the condition of its fire doors.
Fire doors are safety-critical components. They are often used daily, adjusted by contractors, damaged by trolleys, wedged open, painted over, fitted with unsuitable hardware or left with closers that no longer pull the door fully into the frame.
GOV.UK guidance explains that the responsible person for fire safety can include employers, owners, landlords, occupiers, facilities managers, building managers, managing agents and other people with control of premises. Those responsible must carry out and regularly review fire risk assessments, maintain appropriate fire safety measures and plan for emergencies.
That does not mean every door needs a specialist inspection every week. It does mean the condition of fire doors should be known, recorded and acted upon in a way that suits the building and risk profile.

Common reasons to book a fire door inspection.
These are the moments when property teams often realise they need a clearer door-by-door record.
Visible damage
Splits, holes, missing hardware, damaged glazing, loose hinges or doors rubbing on frames should be checked.
Poor closing action
A fire door that does not close fully, latches poorly or needs force to shut may not perform as intended.
Missing records
If historic reports are missing or inconsistent, a fresh inspection can create a clearer baseline.
New building control
When taking on a building or changing managing agent, fire doors should be included in due diligence.
After works
Refurbishment, decoration, access control changes and door hardware works can affect fire door performance.
Audit preparation
Inspections can help prepare for audits, insurer requests, internal reviews and planned maintenance budgets.
